Benjamin Puentes :
Hi! My name is Benjamin Puentes. I am a visual artist born and raised in Colombia. I have been in love with drawing my entire life, and I would say that my biggest inspiration is film. Most of my family works in TV or film in one way or another, which has influenced a lot of my thinking
when it comes to art making. It would feel dishonest to talk about my art without talking about film. I am mostly influenced by Sci-Fi and Fantasy, though I really enjoy incorporating a lot of aspects of drama into my work. I enjoy a variety of mediums but I mainly stick to ink/ digital drawing, but no matter the medium, storytelling has always been at the core of my practice.

Ctrl + S : What are some of the motivations for your piece?
BP : This piece was made for a class assignment with the prompt of creating something using the shape of two
objects. I chose a bell and a pair of scissors. I used the shape of the bell for the body of the creature , and I used the scissors for the “wings”. I wanted to create a creature that was completely alien to the point
where I could have the original shape of the object fairly intact, but still have it feel like something from another world. I wanted the piece to be a document of this creature’s daily activities, almost like a nature
documentary. I did not want anything super dramatic, but rather I wanted to create a serene scene of a creature looking for something, maybe food or maybe something that we humans would not be able to
understand.

Ctrl + S : What is your process like?
BP : My process usually starts with me taking a pen and doodling in my sketchbook until something comes out. For me this is the most frustrating part of the process because most of the things I doodle at this stage
are pretty bad, I doodle for a bit until I get frustrated and then I go do something else. I find that if I'm not getting any good ideas, stopping and coming back the next day with a fresh mind is helpful. In the
meantime I do other activities, and try to mentally solve some of the problems I was having while doodling. Once I finally get something I just chase that idea until I'm at a point where I feel comfortable enough to take it to finish, and from there on I just work on the piece and solve whatever issues I come across until I'm satisfied.
Ctrl + S : How do you like to work? How do you find inspiration? Who inspires you?
BP : I like to work in one go, I find that I am most effective when I can just knock out a project (or at least a specific section of a project) in one session, that is when I get in the zone and most of my best work comes out. As I said, most of my inspiration comes from film, though honestly I would say it comes from all storytelling-based media in general. I love reading comics and consuming all types of different media. I have kind of trained myself to always be on the lookout for things I can “steal” to incorporate in my work. I am constantly writing little notes to myself or taking photos of things that I find interesting, that way I can build a visual library in my head to reference later. There are so many people that inspire my work but I think my biggest inspiration is the author of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda. One Piece is my favorite piece of media ever, the sheer dedication and passion that Oda puts into One Piece is something that never ceases to amaze me, and the idea that this one man can create something so incredible like this is simply beyond me, even just writing about it I feel inspired.
Ctrl + S : Any general goals for yourself and/or your art?
BP : Right now my biggest goals are to improve my art and writing as much as possible. A lot of what I want to do in the future involves writing and it is not something that I think I am very good at yet, so I am
working to improve on that. As for the future, I definitely want to create my own graphic novel(s) and I also want to work in movies. I am not sure what job I would want in a film production yet, but I know that it is something I want to do and something I will do.
